My latest project involves redesigning a brand new 600m2 back garden. The house is a 1920s Arts and Crafts style with a new, contemporary extension which is in the last stages of completion. The Arts and Crafts garden style is best known perhaps through the designs and collaboration of Gertrude Jekyll and Edwin Lutyens. They were influenced by the same aspects which inspired William Morris.. the use of traditional crafts and materials with a simplicity of design and using inherited skills passed down through the generations.
The designs which evolved during this period use a structure in the garden, be it with paths, par terres, pergolas, neatly cut hedging etc, but then softened with planting using traditional plants such as roses, hollyhocks, Astrantia, Lavender, Foxgloves etc ..
I like to think that this project has already been given a head start with the addition of a contemporary, minimalist extension to a traditional house. The roofline is the same and the same slates have been used, so that the addition is a sympathetic but contrasting one to the original style.
