A brand new extension has been completed as a contemporary addition to this 1920s Arts and Crafts style house in South Ayrshire. I have completed a full hard and soft landscaping design for the back garden.
I have been asked now to provide my clients with a design for the front garden. Keep checking in as I add photographs of progress.
For an in depth view of the details of this project which took 7 weeks to complete, please see the photos below.

The ‘before’.. The lawn dominated, the borders are narrow and there is a lack of height in the garden which means a lack of privacy and a very open feel.
I have created a planting plan for a woodland garden which will provide a cosier feel to the garden. By adding full standard trees an immediate sense of privacy will be created once they are planted. They are trees which will be suited to the coastal conditions. These will be underplanted by semi-evergreen/evergreen perennials such as Heucherella, Epimedium, Bergenia in large blocks to avoid a fussy/bitty effect. I will be planting a large swathe of Stipa tenuissima mixed with Achillea Terra Cotta and can't wait to see that effect. This will be planted around the perimeter of the extension which is South facing, to create a constant movement of 'waves' as the extension protrudes into the garden rather like the prow of a ship!
There will be a large border which we will keep for 'waifs and strays' which will be uprooted and replanted from the existing garden. We will try and minimise waste and reuse the top soil which will be safely stored while the hard landscaping takes place.

This is the view from the kitchen.. you can see a window of one of the neighbouring houses in the distance. The boundary wall is low and there are not many taller shrubs/trees in this garden which contribute to the lack of privacy.
Lovely views from the new extension! My job is to provide a planting plan in addition to the hard landscaping plan in order to create a cosier garden.
